Presenters

Dr. James Boyce is Professor of New Testament and Greek at Luther Seminary.

Dr. Barbara Garrett, CI/CT, is Chair of the Carlstrom Deaf Studies Department and Interpreter Training Program at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Garrett is also an ordained Assemblies of God minister.

Mark Koterwski, BS, has been deaf since birth and graduated from Gallaudet University. He currently works for CSD-South Dakota as a Community Specialist. Mark works with the interpreting community in the area of mentoring and as an ASL instructor and advisor. He is the president of Evangelical Lutheran Deaf Association and is on the board of the Heartland Ephphatha Ministries.

Susan Masters, MDiv, MSW, CI/CT, has been a sign language interpreter for more than 25 years and a clinical social worker for 20 years. She recently completed a divinity degree at Luther Seminary and currently awaits call and ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

Dr. Mons A. Teig is Professor Emeritus of Worship at Luther Seminary.

Learning Objectives

Participants will increase knowledge and enhance professional practice in the areas of:

  • the (spoken) English liturgy as typically practiced in Lutheran, Catholic, and Episcopal traditions;
  • interpreting liturgical frozen texts such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostle’s Creed, and the Words of Institution;
  • interpreting scripture (focusing on common theological/biblical concepts, and use of space, classifiers, discourse, location, and movement in ASL);
  • interpreting music (congregational and choral);
  • the use of published and internet resources (lexicons, concordances, etc.) to prepare biblical and theological concepts for interpretation into ASL.

ACET and RID will award 1.2 CEUsThis workshop is offered for 1.2 CEUs, in the content area of Professional Studies, by the CATIE Center at the College of St. Catherine, an approved RID sponsor for continuing education activities. This workshop assumes some knowledge of the topic.

ELDA 2008 in Minneapolis

The next conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Deaf Association will take place July 6-13, 2008 at Northwestern Christian College in Minneapolis, MN.

TENTATIVE ELDA CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

  • Pastoral Workers: Pastoral Workers arrive July 6, 2008 and will meet July 7-9, 2008.
  • ELDA Board Members: ELDA Board Members will arrive by July 9, 2008 in time to hold meetings that afternoon. Meetings will also be held the morning of July 10, 2008.
  • ELDA Conference: ELDA Conference will run from July 10, 2008 starting with registration in the afternoon and run through worship on July 13, 2008.

Bread of Life Deaf Church will host this conference.
